FEBRUARY FUN
We received welcome rain along with eight inches of snow the ground was not frozen and the snow was insulation. Thus we had mud, but I tell the guys it looks more promising than the dust flying. Most of this month was spent getting ready for the sale and calving. With the mud we had to wash the bulls. Luck was with us as the kids had quarter break from school. Thus about six high school boys came and did they work - too bad the news media wasn't here to do an article about the good kids in Franklin, Nebraska. We had a nice sunny day for the sale and most of the mud had dried. Everyone needs to have at least one sale to realize what goes into putting on a sale. I always thought sales would get easier each year but that doesn't happen. We had our largest crowd ever of about 650 people and cattle sold into 14 states. I fixed more food than usual but all that was left were a few carrot sticks. We enjoy sale day but it is almost a blurrrrr - so much to think about, we want to visit with as many people as possible, the guys have a million questions to answer about the cattle, and the phones are ringing. We are fortunate to have good help and for the most part they are the same every year. It was a great sale with much interest. The top bull, TC Total 410 is a "208" son. He sold for $85,000 to Van Beek Ranch and River Bottom Cattle in SD and Maplecrest Angus and J Bar J in Ohio. A Freedom son, TC Stout 407 sold for $30,000 to Smith Farm Angus in Nebraska. The 10 breeder bulls averaged $21,770; the 169 registered bulls averaged $3,917; and the 41 heifer calves averaged $2,068 we were more than pleased and thank all the buyers, bidders and breeders who came for the sale. If you want more information on the sale, click on cattle sales. Two days after the sale, Trude and I went to Omaha to do some shopping for the office in their new home. They are hoping to move in a couple of weeks. Then Vance, Dru and Hannah joined us in Lincoln. We all had a little R & R and Hannah got to swim. The next day we all enjoyed seeing "River Dance." Even though we had a tremendous sale and it made the banker smile, I leave you this month with . . .
