OCTOBER ORBITS

Rounding up cattle to drive to corn stalk fields
Vance and Dru attended some female sales that were good. At the present time the cattle business sure looks better than the farming grain business. We are in a diversified area so can really compare the two.

This was harvest month and the irrigated corn was some of the highest yields we have ever raised. However, the irrigation fuel bills were the highest we have ever paid. The dry land crops did not make it and we are still waiting for moisture. At least harvest was not held up due to rain.

We all went to the Ozark Country in Missouri for a wedding. The groom was one of Dru’s best high school classmates and he spent many days and nights at our house. It was a fun wedding except that Missouri beat Nebraska in football. Of course, in Nebraska you don’t schedule weddings on game days - but that is not true in Missouri. They had a couple of TVs at the reception for Nebraska fans.

We are in our second year of a fall calving program. The guys like fall calving as they have been able to check the cows once a day and have had no problems with scours or sickness. We feel this is due to more stable weather than come February and March.

Some of the first Freedom calves have sold at sales and they have been some of the high sellers. Think this speaks well for these calves. The Freedom calves look good here at TC and cattleman have picked them out when visiting. The spring calves are really growing and I hear the guys commenting on how uniform the sire groups are.

With the Nebraska loss to Missouri, I leave you this month with . . .

“You’ll go far, far more, if you don’t keep score.”
