SEPTEMBER SIGNALS
The saying that “times goes fast when one is having fun” was true of September. And adding to this we have received some nice, much needed rains. The rains were too late for the crops but a big help to the pastures. Finally the cattle are selected for the sale and the catalog is at the printer. We will be mailing it the first week of October. Let us know if you want to be included on this mailing. The guys are pleased with the good set of females they selected for the sale - it is always hard to part with some of the top producers that always produce top calves. If you want more information and pictures go to the TC Sales section and/or last month’s diary for pictures. At TC Ranch the cattle business is a continuous circle - we just finished weaning the spring calves and have started the fall calving season. The calves are weaned and with excellent health. They received their second shots when weaned. We did some pasture weaning which Vance thinks works the best. There are some excellent calves by different sires.
The football season has started and our Big Red Machine is rolling. They have just finished a major addition with additional sky boxes, a big screen (which was to be the largest till Texas made theirs a foot larger) and an additional 6,000 seats. The stadium now holds 85,000 - which is not the largest but for the number of people in Nebraska it is the third largest city on game day. While on sports the NE women's volleyball team is ranked # 1. The National Player of the year was not only a NE player but from a small town just west of Franklin. She is out for the season after having surgery and we are still #1 and undefeated. It looks to be a great season. Most schools don't take volleyball as serious as we do in Nebraska. We have very good high school volleyball and thus it carries over to college. The games are sold out with 4,800 in attendance. We played Creighton in Omaha and there were over 12,000 at that game. The fall sale season is off to a great start. Dru went to several sales in Oklahoma and reported that there was lots of interest and enthusiasm. Vance attended the National Conference and tour in Idaho. He was pleased to see some good cattle by TC breeding in the Northwest. Thanks to all those who spent time and energy to put on these events. This is Mozart's 250th birthday and I decided it would be fun to take a Mozart influence trip. Vance and Dru turned me down but son Ty was ready for a good time during his break from college. Thus we toured Central Europe. First stop was several days in Prague - Ty fell in love with Prague and hopes to some day live there for at least a year. Sure hope he does so I can go back for another visit. Then we cruised the Blue Danube visiting Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. I only saw cattle once and they were not even black. It was a small pasture with six cows. I did see some corn fields and in the Wachau Valley many, many vineyards on extremely steep hills. I like to travel and hope to do more - it makes things in the news come alive when one has visited the different places. Since I traveled to Mozart's home and places where he wrote, I leave you this month with… “Music, even in situations of the greatest horror, should never be painful to the ear but should flatter and charm it, and thereby always remain music” - - - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart |
