APRIL AWARENESS
This is probably our busiest month of the year. We are finishing up delivery of the sale bulls, starting to AI the heifers, synchronizing the heifers and cows, trying to plant corn and the list goes on. On April 2 Vance’s mother passed away. She was 97 last August and had lived in her own home and taken care of her own business. A week before, she had a stroke and fell and was in a nursing home for only a week. She had played the organ at church from age 11 to 95 and been active in community activities. We will miss her but she had a long, good life. Vance spent a couple of days in Alabama. He spoke at their annual Angus banquet. He does not consider himself a public speaker, but from the comments I heard he did a good job. When asked how he decides what to breed an animal to — he said, “by the seat of my pants.” Hope they all understood what that meant. We have worked most of the calves so they will be ready to go to pasture. It has been cold so the grass is really slow coming. We have started breeding the heifers A.I. and then the cows. We synchronized by using ciders. Nebraska University had their annual Red White football game scrimmage. There were 85,000 people attending and it was not free. I think we have a long ways to go to get to the top 10 — but people do have lots of faith in our new coach. In fact he could probably be elected Governor of Nebraska today. With the death of Vance’s Mother, I leave you this month with . . . “It’s the simple joys, the simple pleasures the heart remembers and dearly treasures.” |
