JANUARY JOURNAL
Wow what a way to start a New Year. No electricity. We had what they called an extreme ice storm December 31st and the ice stayed for three days - it was beautiful but -- what a job for the utility crews. We were without electricity for nine days where we live and our north ranch was out for twenty-one days. It covered a large area and in one place for 28 miles there was not a single east-west pole left standing. Utility crews came from many states and we certainly appreciate them leaving their families to assist. A shelter was set up in Franklin to assist with living and meals - great to live in a community that can help take care of others. The town of Franklin had their own generator so the "city" folk had power. We were running five generators at one time - appreciate those loaning them to us. Speaking of generators we had two loaded ready to leave for Denver. However, they took one out and left at the ranch to make the work easier. Had a good show in Denver with lots of interest. We always enjoy visiting with the cattle people stop by the carload pen. Local people think we are on vacation - but little do they know about showing in Denver. It was really cold several days but we have a tough crew.
Vance had a longer stay in Denver as he judged the Simmental cattle on the hill and also the Hereford carload show. Once home from Denver then it was time to fertility test and ultrasound the sale bulls, working on the catalog and trying to take pictures. You would think all of this would get easier after 33 years - but it doesn't happen that way. Since we are without power, I leave you this month with . . . “We never understand how little we need in this world until we know the loss of it.” - - - James M. Barrie |
